Advantages of Using Concrete Mix

The terms concrete and cement are often used interchangeably. That’s understandable since concrete is made from water, aggregate material (rocks, gravel, sand), and cement. In other words, cement is an ingredient in concrete.

Cement is a powdery substance made with calcined lime, clay, and other ingredients that can be mixed with water to form mortar or mixed with sand, gravel, and water to make concrete. It’s a bonding agent that reacts when mixed with the other ingredients in concrete.

Concrete Mixes

A primary difference between regular and concrete mix that’s fast settingis that most fast setting options contain more cement, which causes a stronger, faster bond.  Regular concrete needs 24-48 hours to set while fast setting mixing can reach the desired hardness in an hour or less. That makes it easy to understand why concrete mixes have seen a steady rise in use. The construction industry has discovered its advantages.

Let’s look at some of those advantages:

  • Fewer Materials Required – Mixing concrete on a construction site requires room to store and mix massive amounts of admixtures, aggregates, and water, as well as the equipment and labor required. Concrete mixes require less space and fewer labor resources.
  • Lower Cement Usage – Concrete-mixes makes it more comfortable to estimate the size of a project because it’s easy to add more later if you need it. That’s very different than the older traditional site mix projects where buyers tended to overestimate the amount of concrete required because underestimating could end up wasting valuable time.
  • Faster and Easier – Concrete mixes typically set faster and require fewer steps. Jobs can be completed quickly and efficiently. Since many companies charge on an hourly basis, efficiency can be a significant factor.

Some building projects work best using concrete mix that’s fast setting because of its reduced time to harden. Smaller jobs, such as installing fence posts, are ideal for these mixes. But, obviously, fast-setting concrete mixes aren’t the right solution for every project. The thing to be careful of is exactly what the name implies. If you have a project where you need a lot of concrete in multiple areas, you have to be careful because the mixes set quickly. If that’s the case, you have to make sure you have sufficient labor resources to work as fast as the shortened drying time demands.

Another big benefit is that concrete mix is easier to work with than traditional alternatives. Except for large concrete projects, concrete mixes continue to find favor in the world of construction and DIY projects for some very good reasons.
